Wastewater treatment
Tivat-Kotor, Montenegro

We planned and built a wastewater treatment plant for the two Montenegrin coastal towns of Tivat and Kotor. This combines the wastewater treatment of both towns in one plant. The wastewater treatment plant was designed to ensure that wastewater is treated on site at all times, even during peak tourism periods in the summer months. Following the successful commissioning in 2016, the WTE Group was also contracted to take over the operational management of the plant for a total of four years. At the end of the contract period and after years of good cooperation, we handed the wastewater treatment plant back to the customer at the end of June 2020.

The WTE Group was commissioned with the design, construction and operational management of the wastewater treatment plant in 2014. The contract was awarded jointly by both cities. The project was implemented as part of a financing agreement between the Montenegrin government and the German Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). The contract value totalled
10.25 million Euros.

With the modern wastewater treatment plant for the cities of Kotor and Tivat, we are doing our part to ensure good water quality in the region. This also preserves the natural beauty of the area, such as the sensitive ecosystem in the Bay of Kotor. Find out more about our efforts in the areas of environmental protection and sustainability – regionally and internationally.

Joint effort between two cities for reliable wastewater treatment

The wastewater treatment plant consists of a screen and grit chamber building, four tanks for biological wastewater treatment using the flexible sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process, a blower station and a sludge treatment building. The plant also includes training and administration buildings.

Before handover to the customer, the future personnel who will continue to operate the plant underwent extensive training. Since June 2020, the local utility companies “Vodovod i kanalizacija Tivat” and “Vodovod i kanalizacija Kotor” have been responsible for this – after all, this plant serves the wastewater of two cities.

Montenegro and the German Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau invested a total of 10.25 million Euros in the construction of the plant.

However, this modern new build not only provides professional wastewater treatment for the cities of Kotor and Tivat, it also ensures the protection of the Bay of Kotor, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It therefore significantly contributes to environmental protection and tourism in the region. The plant also fulfils all EU standards and stands for consistently high water quality.
