Handover of the wastewater treatment plant Tivat-Kotor / Montenegro

On 30.06.2020, after 4 years of operation, the Tivat-Kotor Wastewater Treatment Plant was handed over to the customer – the utility companies “Vodovod i kanalizacija Tivat” and “Vodovod i kanalizacija Kotor”.

In February 2014, WTE Wassertechnik GmbH was commissioned with the construction and subsequent operation of the wastewater treatment plant for the two coastal towns of Tivat and Kotor. After construction and commissioning, the finished plant was accepted by the customer in August 2016 and further operational management was carried out by WTE. Upon expiry of the contract period, the wastewater treatment plant was successfully handed over to the customer for continued operation at the end of June 2020.

The project was implemented under a financing agreement between the Montenegrin government and the German development bank KfW. The contract value amounted to EURO 10.2 million.

The wastewater treatment plant is designed for a capacity of up to 72,500 population equivalents. This already takes into account the peak loads caused by summer tourism. The wastewater treatment plant consists of a screen and a grit chamber building, 4 SBR tanks (sequencing batch reactor process – a variant of the conventional activated sludge process), a blower station, sludge treatment and administration building.

Montenegro is a popular tourist country, most of them come from Serbia, Austria, Germany or France. The bustling Tivat claims to have the most hours of sunshine in Montenegro and, with its huge marina, attracts the world’s wealthiest captains to the Bay of Kotor. The 350 m wide bay is the deepest fjord in the Mediterranean. It is lined by the rugged, steeply sloping mountain sides of the Dinaric Alps. The region with its wonderful climate is characterised by a long Venetian rule. The Boka, as the bay is called, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It alternates bays and straits, along which lie enchanting medieval towns such as Kotor, Perast and Risan.

The project is a major contribution to environmental protection and meets the strict EU standards. The entire region will benefit from its enormous efforts to improve seawater quality. We are delighted to have been able to help.
