Following a public tendering procedure, WTE, in consortium with a local company, was awarded the contract by Vodovod i kanalizacija Split d.o.o. at the end of 2024 for the planning, construction and one-year trial operation of the main wastewater treatment plant in Stupe, Split, Croatia.

The contract forms part of a project to ‘improve the water and municipal infrastructure of the Split-Solin agglomeration’ and is one of the largest contracts in Croatia.

The existing plant will be refurbished and extended to include a biological treatment stage. The aim is to achieve year-round carbon elimination and partial nitrogen elimination during periods of high wastewater temperatures (mainly in the summer months). A completely new sludge line with anaerobic digestion and thermal sludge drying will also be constructed. The project is scheduled to take 43 months.

Once completed, the central wastewater treatment plant will have a biological wastewater treatment capacity of 275,000 PE, corresponding to a daily wastewater volume of 60,000 m³. It will treat all wastewater from Split, Solin, Podstrana, Klis and Dugopolje.

Ideally adapted to the location thanks to innovative plant technology

The extension of the existing mechanical main wastewater treatment plant is being carried out on a very limited construction site. Thanks to the integration of innovative plant technology, our facility can treat around 60,000 m³ of wastewater per day to a high-quality standard, depending on the season.

Due to the sludge line’s large capacity of 400,000 PE, all sludges from the surrounding area will be transported to Stupe for centralised treatment in future.

The WTE will make a significant contribution towards improving the ecological status of the Adriatic Sea between the Croatian islands and the mainland surrounding the submarine discharge. This will raise the standard of wastewater treatment on the Adriatic coast.
