On 14 March 2019, the WTE Group took another important step towards strengthening relations with the Lithuanian water industry. In a formal ceremony, Jörg Köring, WTE and Gintaras Diržausku, Director Utena Water, signed the contract for the construction of a turnkey sludge treatment plant at the Utena Wastewater Treatment Plant in the presence of Mayor Alvydas Katinas. The new contract will be realised by UAB WTE Baltic together with the contractual partner UAB “Dzukijos Statyba” on behalf of JSC “Utenos Vandenys”.

Mayor Katinas called the signing of the contract an historic event and stated: “Lithuania’s first sludge treatment plant with the latest technology is now being built in Utena,” which Director Diržausku emphasised once again.
The plant will be erected over a period of two years during ongoing operation. It comprises the planning and construction of the process stages thickening, digestion, gas utilisation, dewatering, drying and incineration.

The sludge produced at the site as well as co-substrates accrued in the Utena catchment area will be recycled.
With this plant, the WTE Group is making an important contribution to ensuring safe disposal in the region, as well as towards conserving resources by generating electricity from the biogas produced and the possibility of later recovering vital phosphorus from the sewage sludge ash.
