Skopje, 13 June 2025 – On 13 June, the Mayor of Skopje, Ms. Danela Arsovska, visited the construction site of the city’s new wastewater treatment plant. Her visit highlights the importance of this project for sustainable urban development and environmental protection in North Macedonia.

The plant is being built on a site of approximately 184,000 square meters, located between the districts of Gazi Baba and Aerodrom. With a total of 58 individual structures – including a raw water pumping station, reception building, grit and grease removal systems, and digestion towers – it is one of the largest environmental infrastructure projects in Southeast Europe. Many of these structures are already under active construction.

In an official statement following her visit, Mayor Arsovska emphasized Skopje’s pioneering role in the implementation of modern water and wastewater infrastructure. Initiated alongside cities such as Podgorica, Pristina, and Banja Luka, Skopje’s project is currently the most advanced.

The new plant will provide both mechanical and biological wastewater treatment, significantly improving surface and groundwater quality. It is set to play a key role in protecting the environment and enhancing the quality of life for the region’s population.

The project is being implemented by the public utility “Water Supply and Sewerage – Skopje” with strong support from the European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

This initiative is considered a flagship project for environmental innovation and technical excellence in Southeast Europe. It exemplifies how local institutions and international partners can work together to develop and implement effective solutions for urgent environmental and infrastructure challenges.
