One of the most important infrastructure projects in the Croatian water sector has got underway: on 28 July 2026, the start of construction of the Stupe wastewater treatment plant – which WTE is implementing as consortium leader – was officially celebrated.

The ceremony took place on the site of the wastewater treatment plant, which is situated on the eastern outskirts of the city of Split. The high-ranking guests from the worlds of politics, business and public administration emphasised the great significance of the project for Croatia’s water management sector. Speakers at the event included Anja Bagarić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, Zoran Đuroković, General Manager of Croation Waters (Hrvatske vode), Blaženko Boban, Prefect of Split-Dalmatia County, Tomislav Šuta, Mayor of Split, and Ivica Perić, Director of the ‘Vodovod i kanalizacija’ (Water Supply and Sewerage) utility company. Following the speeches, those present proceeded to the construction site for a ceremonial walk-through.

Second largest wastewater treatment plant in Croatia
WTE is acting as consortium leader on this major project and is undertaking the comprehensive modernisation and expansion of the existing main wastewater treatment plant on behalf of the client, Vodovod i kanalizacija Split d.o.o. – from planning through to trial operation. Once completed, the plant will be the second-largest wastewater treatment plant in Croatia and the central hub of the integrated wastewater system for the Split–Solin conurbation. With a capacity of 275,000 p.e. the plant will treat the entire wastewater flow from Split, Solin, Podstrana, Klis and Dugopolje.

The wastewater treatment plant will make a significant contribution to environmental protection in the region. In particular, its high-quality wastewater treatment will significantly improve the ecological status of the Adriatic Sea and the Brač Channel. It will also ensure compliance with European directives on municipal wastewater treatment.

Further background information
The contract value for the design and expansion of the plant is around 99 million euros. The planned construction period is 18 months, followed by a one-year trial operation.
The contract forms part of a project to ‘improve water-utility infrastructure in the Split-Solin agglomeration’, with a total value of around 321.3 million euros, which is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund. In addition to the wastewater treatment plant, the project includes the construction of 125 kilometres of main sewer pipes, a new underwater outfall and 65 kilometres of water supply pipes.
